  • Is a heat pump or mini split unit enough to heat and cool my home in Lake of the Ozarks?

    1. Change or Clean Air Filters Regularly

  • How to tell if your Thermostat is Broken

    1. Thermostat has NO POWER

    Nothing appears on the Screen. Normally it should display the room Temperature. Check-change the batteries in the thermostat if you insert new batteries and nothing displays the thermostat itself may be malfunctioning.


    2. Furnace or Air Conditioner will not Shut Off

    A thermostat that is not working properly may cause your HVAC equipment to run and not shut off. If you notice your HVAC unit has been running for a long period or time or is not shutting off go to your thermostat and shut it to the OFF position if your HVAC unit continues to run you have an issue.


    3. Furnace or Air Conditioner will not Turn On 

    If you turn your thermostat on and increase the temperature your furnace should turn on, if it does not come on then you have bad wiring or other issues that are causing your thermostat and Furnace to not communicate.


    4. Thermostat and Room Temperature do not Match

    When a thermostat is working properly, it should display an accurate temperature of what it feels like inside your home. But if the room feels much hotter or colder than the display temperature, that means your thermostat can’t accurately measure the room’s temperature.

  • 3 quick tips to prepare your furnace before winter

    What should you do to get your furnace working well before the cold sets in?  

    Some of these will appear very simple but a checklist of 3 things you will want to do before winter is in full swing. 


    1. Change your thermostat from Cool to Heat. 

    Set the temperature a couple of degrees higher than the current room temperature. If you don’t hear the furnace kick on within a minute or two double check the connections and batteries of your thermostat if that does not work may want to check other power sources to your furnace or you may want to call a Heating Contractor to check out your system. 


    2.  Test Run your Furnace.

    Test run your furnace before cold weather sets in.  While your heating unit is running listen for strange or abnormal sounds (banging – rattling, etc) Walk around to your vents and make sure warm are is flowing freely.

  • 3 things to consider when buying a furnace and new HVAC System

    SEER Rating 

    Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or Rating – Benefits of a higher SEER rating or ratio is that the HVAC system greater efficiency in certain conditions and greater indoor comfort in the summer months especially in regions like Lake of the Ozarks.

  • How often should you have your air conditioner serviced?

    Air Conditioning equipment, no matter what kind you have, should be inspected, cleaned, and serviced at least once a year.  This will ensure that your Air Conditioner is running in the most effective & efficient manner.  Benjamin Franklin was correct “An ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure”  

    The best scenario is to have the heating system checked in the Fall and the air conditioning checked in the Spring.



  • What should you do if your AC unit is Freezing up?

    Unfortunately, AC Freezing happens and is not that uncommon.


    The first thing to do is Turn the AC off and let it defrost, this may take 1 to 3 Hours, turn on just the fan for 30 to 60 minutes this will help circulate air through the coils and help dry them, after this is completed then turn your AC back on, check and make sure it is blowing cold air, if not you should probably call a Professional Service Tech to do a diagnostic check.

    1. Filter Problems – Dirty or Plugged Filters

    One of the most common AC unit problems is a dirty filter. Dirty filters reduce airflow and can cause parts of the AC to freeze. Make sure to follow your air conditioner manufacturer's recommended filter maintenance. 


    2. Fan-Related Issues

    Fans blow indoor air over the evaporator to cool it. Another fan blows through the outdoor condenser to expel heat outside. Fans enable the movement of air through the system, and they are an integral part of the AC. A bad motor, wear and tear damage, dirt & debris can all lead to reduced airflow, decreased efficiency, and sometimes, compressor failure. 


    3. Coils Require Replacement

    Evaporator coils push cool air into the house from the inside, while condenser coils operate outside with the compressor. Both can become corroded or dirty. Clean outside coils with a hose every so often.


    4. Insufficient Refrigerant

    Refrigerant removes heat and humidity from the air. Leaks in the refrigerant delivery system decrease the efficiency of the cooler, and the temperature may fluctuate as a result. Fixing this issue often requires an HVAC technician to repair the leaks. This process can be time-consuming and expensive.


  • Common reasons and trouble shooting tips for furnace problems

    1 - Check Your Thermostat to make sure it's ON

    It may sound simple, but check the thermostat to ensure it is set on  HEAT and that it is programmed at least five degrees above room temperature, then wait to make sure it kicks in and starts. You might be surprised how many service calls are made without checking this! 


    Step 1: Check the battery on the thermostat. You may need to change the batteries on your thermostat. If your home's thermostat unit runs on batteries, be sure you are changing them at least once a year, or as needed. “May want to change yearly when you change the fire alarms”


    If your thermostat is hard wired and not working it may be best to call a professional and have them trouble shoot your issue.


    Step 2: Open the thermostat and gently blow any dust or dirt particles that may be interfering with some connection points


    Step 3: Make sure the date and time is correct on electronic or programmable models – Look to see if it is programmed to start at a specific time


    Step 4: Check the breaker. If on, turn off the breaker and check the fuse for the furnace.



    2 - Furnace is Not Producing Heat

    After confirming the thermostat is working - Try to Reset furnace Circuit Breaker


    How to Test/check Home Breakers:


    Go to your breaker panel and look for the circuit that controls the furnace. Look to see if it’s thrown to the “Off” position, or whether it’s in the middle, if so, manually test the breaker. Flip it back and forth. Make sure it is staying in the "On" position.  This will reset the breaker. If this does not do the trick you will want to call a HVAC Service tech to run some tests.



    3 - Furnace is Not Producing Enough Heat

    Check and Change Your Clogged Filter


    If the furnace doesn't heat the home sufficiently, first ensure that the air filter is clean and in good condition.  This is a simple and essential part of furnace maintenance. One of the most common reasons to have a furnace not working is a clogged filter.  Replacing your furnace filter should be done regularly and goes a long way in protecting your system and improving air quality.


    Change your filters as instructed with your systems specs.  Hold it up to the light and if you can not see light it is time to change, if your vents are blowing dusty, dirty smelling air you need to change your filter.

    4. Safety Switch on Furnace Door

    If your furnace is not operating, one of the first things you should do is check the safety switch on the furnace door. A safety switch prevents the fan and burner from coming on while the access panel is removed.  Furnaces have a safety switch that pops out when the door is removed. The door must be in place for the switch to be activated and for the furnace to operate.


    If placing the panel or door into the correct placement does not fix the problem you may want to call a Service Tech to trouble shoot the issue.


    5 - Keep the Area Around Your Furnace Clean and Unobstructed

    This may seem like an obvious tip, but sometimes homeowners with busy lives forget to pay attention to areas of their home like the basement.


    Avoid storing flammable substances or materials near your furnace. 



    6 - Look at the Burner Flames

    Look at the Burner Flames one of the most common failures associated with your burners can come from contamination. You will want to inspect your burners to make sure they are free from debris. When looking if they are burning blue and even they are likely in good shape.  If the flames are yellow and the burners look dirty they more than likely are.  Dust and dirt can accumulate in the summer when your furnace is not running. 


    A combination of condensation and soot can cause burners to function improperly, and may cause other furnace problems as well. The burner assembly should be cleaned annually or replaced if the existing one is in poor condition.

    1. Difficulty Starting your Furnace or It will not Stay Running

    If you have a furnace that struggles starting and then shuts off or will not keep running there could be multiple problems to address, wiring, circuit boards, thermostat, or many other internal parts.  Replacing the part or parts should resolve the issue.


    2. Bad Smells

    Have you noticed a burning smell coming from your furnace? 

    • This could be the result of a soot buildup in the heat exchanger or on other parts that are near the flame or heat source.

  • Steps to take before starting your air conditioner this spring

    As we all know living at the Lake, warm-hot days will soon be here, and often single hot days will hit us unexpectedly. Now is the time to check you air conditioners and make sure your air conditioning system is working correctly and read for the warm lake days.


    SAFETY FIRST – Turn off the circuit breaker and any power before working on any HVAC system


    1.  Check the outdoor air conditioning unit

    • Clear yard debris around you unit, check for nest from various critters and make sure there has not been any physical damage to your unit. If you see damage or have concerns call a HVAC company inspect your Air Conditioning System.

    2. Clean the outside unit

    • Clean the outside and coils with a garden hose.  You may want to grab a bucket of sudsy water and a rag and physically clean the unit. 

    3. Replace or clean your filters

    • Replacing filters on your HVAC system will ensure maximum efficiency and help keep your air inside your home cleaner.    

    4. Check your indoor condensate drain lines

    • Make sure your condensation lines are not plugged or full of debris.  Most of the time the condensation lines are run to drain.

    5. Test your Air Conditioner

    • Turn the power back on, make sure you have power to your thermostat and turn it to cool.  Listen to the unit and make sure you are not hearing strange noises, make sure you are not smelling any type of “burning” and then make sure you are feeling cooled air and that all vents are blowing air.

  • Warning signs your air conditioner may need repairs

    It is summer, it is going to get hot in Lake of the Ozarks. You’ll want to make sure your air conditioner is working and keeping your family cool and comfortable.     WARM AIR – If you have warm air blowing through your vents, the first place to check is your thermostat and make sure it is in the AC mode and set to a lower temperature. If it continues to blow warm air after a few minutes, you more than like have a system issue.

    Change Your Furnace Filter

If you don’t know the size remove the old one, the size will be marked on the side and then replace it with a new one.



    Clear Vent Obstructions


    Before turning on your furnace, take the covers off your vents and make sure there is nothing obstructing your vents. Grab your vacuum or shop vac using the hose reach in as far as you can and remove all the dust and nasty stuff that has accumulated.
